About this role

Working under the direction of the Mercy Health Life Flight Network Director of Flight Operations, the Critical Care Flight Dispatcher receives requests for ground and/or air critical services via telephone and radio. They determine the appropriate response, enter information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System, and select and dispatch the appropriate unit(s) to the nature of the emergency.

Receives all incoming telephone inquiries for critical care assistance in a timely, professional, and courteous manner. Triages all requests for transport and accurately enters required information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System. Activates transport teams and relays details on patient location and condition when possible.

Maintains professional radio and phone communication utilizing excellent customer service skills with transport teams, hospital staff, physicians, and public safety personnel. Operates communications equipment, maintains records, and ensures billing paperwork is completed accurately. Participates in quality management, emergency-procedure testing, and annual Emergency Response Plan drills.

Demonstrates critical thinking abilities when triaging patient transports and making independent decisions in high-stress environments. Maintains knowledge of policies, procedures, EMS regulations, and operational control requirements per 14CFR135.77. Pursues required certifications like EMD within 6 months and IAMTCS Certified Flight Communicator within 12 months.

Requirements

  • Basic Life Support (BLS) (required)
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) (preferred, but required within 6 months of employment)
  • International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialist (IAMTCS) Certified Flight Communicator (preferred, but required within 12 months of employment)
  • Incident Command Service (ICS) Certifications: 100, 200 and 700 (preferred)
  • Ohio Paramedic (preferred)
  • High School Diploma/GED (required)

Responsibilities

  • Receive all incoming telephone inquiries for critical care assistance in a timely, professional and courteous manner
  • Maintain professional radio and phone communication utilizing excellent customer service skills when interacting with administration, transport teams, requesting agencies, hospital staff, physicians, and public safety personnel
  • Triage all requests for transport and accurately enter all required information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System
  • Maintain all required records and other documentation associated with patient transport and ensure all billing paperwork is completed accurately
  • Activate transport teams and accurately relay information concerning the location and condition of the patient
  • Maintain knowledge of the Mercy Health Life Flight Network Emergency Response Plan and participate in quality management, emergency-procedure testing, and annual drills
  • Demonstrate critical thinking abilities when triaging patient transports and making decisions in an independent and high stress environment
