About this role

Working under the direction of the Mercy Health Life Flight Network Director of Flight Operations, the Critical Care Flight Dispatcher receives requests for ground and/or air critical services via telephone and radio. They determine the appropriate response, enter information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System, and dispatch the suitable unit to emergencies. This ensures efficient coordination of patient transports.

Daily tasks include receiving incoming telephone inquiries for critical care assistance in a timely, professional manner and triaging all transport requests accurately. Dispatchers maintain professional radio and phone communication with transport teams, hospital staff, physicians, and public safety personnel using excellent customer service skills. They activate teams and relay patient location and condition details.

In a high-stress environment, dispatchers demonstrate critical thinking for triaging transports and independent decision-making. They maintain knowledge of policies, procedures, EMS regulations, and operational control requirements per 14CFR135.77. The role involves onsite work in Lima, Ohio, during day shifts from 6am to 6pm.

Opportunities include participating in quality management, emergency drills, and the Emergency Response Plan. Dispatchers gain required certifications like Emergency Medical Dispatcher within 6 months and IAMTCS Certified Flight Communicator within 12 months. This supports ongoing professional development in aviation critical care dispatch.

Requirements

  • Incident Command Service (ICS) Certifications: 100, 200 and 700 (required)
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) (required)
  • Emergency Medical Dispatcher (EMD) (preferred, required within 6 months of employment)
  • International Association of Medical Transport Communication Specialist (IAMTCS) Certified Flight Communicator (preferred, required within 12 months of employment)
  • Ohio Paramedic (preferred)
  • Comprehensive understanding of operational control requirements per 14CFR135.77
  • Functional understanding of state and local EMS regulations, local EMS structure, and protocols in service area
  • Ability to make independent decisions in high stress environment

Responsibilities

  • Receives all incoming telephone inquiries for critical care assistance regarding patient transport in a timely, professional and courteous manner
  • Maintains professional radio and phone communication utilizing excellent customer service skills with administration, transport teams, requesting agencies, hospital staff, physicians, and public safety personnel
  • Triages all requests for transport and accurately enters all required information into the Computer-Aided Dispatch System
  • Maintains all required records and documentation associated with patient transport and ensures all billing paperwork is completed accurately
  • Activates transport teams and accurately relays information concerning the location and condition of the patient
  • Maintains knowledge of the Mercy Health Life Flight Network Emergency Response Plan and participates in quality management, emergency-procedure testing, and annual drills
  • Demonstrates working knowledge of all policies, procedures, protocols, state and local EMS regulations in service area
  • Demonstrates critical thinking abilities when triaging patient transports and making decisions in a high stress environment
