About this role
At NAV CANADA, we’re experts in navigating Canada’s skies, helping pilots safely cross 18 million square kilometers of Canadian and North Atlantic airspace. This application is for Air Traffic Controller positions in the Toronto FIR (Ontario).
Our Air Traffic Controllers coordinate the safe, efficient and orderly flow of air traffic across 7 flight information regions. Area Controllers (IFR) work from the Toronto Area Control Centre, managing large sections of airspace, while Tower Controllers (VFR) work at one of 8 towers in the Toronto FIR, using radio communication to issue instructions and clearances.
You do not require any prior specialized training or experience. NAV CANADA pays you to learn, providing paid training that includes classroom, simulator, and on-the-job phases. During training, you receive a salary of $58,606, with qualified Area Controllers earning up to $207,450.

Requirements
- No prior specialized training or aviation experience required
- Must be fluent in English (as per job posting language requirement)
- Ability to maintain situational awareness and make rapid decisions under pressure
- Strong spatial reasoning and multitasking skills to manage multiple aircraft simultaneously
- Willingness to relocate to the Toronto FIR area for training and work
- Must be eligible to work in Canada and able to obtain security clearance
- Must pass medical and psychological assessments as part of the selection process
Responsibilities
- Coordinate the safe, efficient and orderly flow of air traffic in the Toronto Flight Information Region
- As an Area Controller (IFR), manage aircraft in en-route airspace using radar and communication systems from the Toronto Area Control Centre
- As a Tower Controller (VFR), maintain direct visual contact with aircraft and issue instructions and clearances via radio
- Ensure separation between aircraft and provide timely information to pilots to prevent conflicts
- Respond to emergencies and unexpected situations with quick, decisive actions to maintain safety
- Work rotating shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays to cover 24/7 air traffic operations
- Complete rigorous paid training including initial, specialty, and on-the-job phases
