About this role

Air New Zealand has a permanent opportunity available for a Flight Planner to join our Airline Operations team. This role operates on a rotating shift roster (6 days on, 3 days off) and is based at our Airport Campus, close to Auckland Airport. You will play a critical role in ensuring the safe, efficient, and cost-effective operation of flights.

In this high-pressure, 24/7 operational environment, you must be proactive and reactive while maintaining professionalism and composure. Prepare computer flight plans for international and domestic jet operations, as well as turbo prop aircraft. Ensure compliance with fuel policies, ATC regulations, and special route instructions.

Assess en-route, destination, and alternate weather conditions, take-off performance, and aircraft serviceability to optimize decisions. Coordinate with Load Control, Operations Control, and Maintenance Operations to manage payload restrictions, MEL procedures, and disruptions. Your work directly supports pilots, operations teams, and other stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Commercial Pilot’s Licence, or
  • Recognized Flight Planning qualification, or
  • Previous experience as an Air Traffic Controller
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Commitment to on-going maintenance of professional standards and the development of relevant capabilities
  • High standard of performance, safety awareness, and adherence to company values
  • Ability to adapt quickly and make decisions under pressure in a fast-moving operational environment

Responsibilities

  • Prepare computer flight plans for all international and domestic jet operations, as well as turbo prop aircraft, ensuring compliance with fuel policies, ATC regulations, and special route instructions
  • Assess en-route, destination, and alternate weather conditions, take-off performance, and aircraft serviceability to optimize flight planning decisions
  • Coordinate with Load Control, Operations Control, and Maintenance Operations to manage payload restrictions, MEL procedures, and disruptions impacting flight planning
  • Provide comprehensive flight planning and flight watch services to support pilots, operations teams, and stakeholders
  • Work effectively in a team-oriented, high-pressure environment, ensuring each Planning and Flight Watch position is covered as required
  • Monitor aircraft serviceability and operational disruptions to maintain safe and efficient flight operations
