About this role

ASRC Federal Communications seeks an Air Traffic Controller Specialist for the ISS2 contract supporting Air Force customers on Wake Island. This rotational position features 3 months on-island work and 1 month off unpaid. Housing is provided in a dormitory facility with all meals furnished through the cafeteria.

The specialist ensures safe aircraft movement, coordinates Air Traffic Control clearances, and controls flight line activities. Responsibilities include flight following transient aviation, maintaining Base Operations event logs, monitoring Fixed Base Weather Observation Station, and issuing notices for aviation transit through Wake Island Airfield.

Employees relay Oakland ARTCC clearances, transmit ICAO flight plans, process Prior Permission Required requests, and perform airfield inspections including FOD and BASH checks. They act as emergency point of contact, control access to the flightline and Controlled Movement Area, and assist the Airfield Manager as needed.

This negotiated union position requires unsupervised shift work in a multi-tasked aviation environment 2100 miles from Honolulu. Requirements

  • One or more of the following: USAF Airfield Management to include Base Operations, FAA Licensed Aircraft Dispatcher, or FAA Licensed Air Traffic Control (ATC) Specialist
  • High School diploma or equivalent
  • Journeyman skill level in Airfield Management, Air Traffic Control, or Aircraft Dispatch
  • Operation of VHF and UHF air-to-ground radio systems
  • Complete and submit application paperwork for a secret clearance within 30 days of hire
  • Obtain and maintain the secret clearance
  • U.S. Citizen
  • Valid driver’s license

Responsibilities

  • Flight-follows aircraft and reports ATAs, ATDs, and other flight information to ATC agencies
  • Relays Oakland ARTCC ATC clearances to inbound, outbound and over-flying aircraft, and provides airfield advisory service
  • Transmits ICAO flight plans, departure and other messages on appropriate data circuits
  • Processes Prior Permission Required (PPR) requests through designated USAF approval authorities
  • Transmits Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) as required and maintains Flight Information Publications (FLIPs)
  • Performs airfield inspections and Foreign Object Damage (FOD) and Bird Aircraft Strike Hazard (BASH) checks
  • Acts as point of contact for various emergencies and mobilizes emergency response per Base Operations Quick Reaction Checklists
  • Controls and monitors all access and activity on the flightline and Controlled Movement Area (CMA)
